a high school dance, two young people will help each other grow and mature
during a difficult time. In the process, they will learn that no one is perfect,
and we all have something positive to give, which makes us needed by others.@
MUSIC: DOWN AND OUT
SOUND: HIGH SCHOOL HALLWAY NOISE

SHARISSA : AO,

SANDY: AOY.,

SHARISSA : A
Sandy Hawkins! Don=t
you dare start! You are beautiful. Guys do want to take you out, and yesYyou
can go to a dance and have a good time even if you do have a physical challenge!
Hey! It=s
the 21st Century girl!@
SANDY: AO,
SharissaYYou=re
a good friend. You always know what to say when I=m
down. Listen, not that I would go, but you mentioned that some guys do want to
go out with me. Do you know any who wants to ask me to the Fall Fling?@
SHARISSA: ACurt
Spalding. That cute guy on the football team who sits behind you in English
class!@
SANDY: AYou=re
kidding! How do you know?@
SHARISSA : AI
just know! You want me to tell him that you want to go with him?@
SANDY : AWellY,
you know my folks. He=s
from the NorthYand
he doesn=t
attend my church. I don=t
care at all, but you know how my mom is.@
SHARISSA: A
How will she know? Besides, he=s
new to Prestonburg, Kentucky and you=d
better say >yes=
before he asks someone else!@
SANDY : AWellYwhat
aboutYthe
dancing? I can use a walker a little, even stand up for a whileY,
O, Sharissa, I don=t
knowY not
a dance. The other kids might stareY@
SHARISSA: ALeave
it to be babe! We=ll
meet at the dance and have a good time. Listen! You=ve
got to stop thinking everyone is staring. If they do, it=s
because you=re
a doll.@
SANDY : AWhat
do I wear? I can=t
afford a new dress. Daddy=s
not working the hours he used to at the mine.@
SHARISSA : ASew

extra fabric. I just need to buy a pattern.@
MRS. HAWKINS: AI=ll

maam. You should know that I would never wear anything I thought wasn=t
right.@
MRS. HAWKINS : AIs
he a boy from our church? Do we know him? Is it the Royce boy?@
SANDY : ANo,
mamma, it=s
not Lester Royce. He=s
a real nice guy who=s
new here in Prestonburg. His daddy=s
with one of the banks I think. He plays on the football team and is a sweet guy.
He hasn=t
exactly yet asked meY,
but Sharissa said she knows he wants to, and she=ll
mention to him that I=d
go if he asks.@
MRS. HAWKINS : ASharissa!
My word! Should=ve
known it would be her doing. That girl is always trying to get you to set your
sights so high. Last year she talked you into wanting to go to college. What
next?@
MR. HAWKINS : AWould
this boy happen to be the son of some fella=
named Spalding at Farmer=s
State Bank? Some of the boys were telling me this Spalding is ok. He gave some
of the men extensions on their mortgage payments who have been layed off from
the mine. Good man.@
SANDY : AIt
must be his son daddy.@
MRS. HAWKINS : AWellY,
I think maybe your daddy and I need to talk this over. Maybe we need to meet him
first. Why don=t
you ask him to attend church with us and we=ll
have him over for Sunday dinner.@
