Synopsis of Recorded
Radio Drama
Two men spend several weeks in the remote parts of northern Canada searching
for gold. They find gold and, weighted down by their gold dust and personal
belongings, cross the tundra on their way home. While crossing a swift running
stream, one man sprains his ankle and is deserted by his partner. The injured
man has no food and no ammunition for his gun. He struggles with his sanity,
animals, and the elements. To survive he eats raw minnows, baby birds, and water
grass. Finally, in the distance, he sees a ship on a shining sea. The ship is
several miles away and the man is very weak, too weak perhaps, to make the
distance. He continues to move, slowly yet determinedly, toward the ship. At one
point he comes across the bones of his partner, clean picked by a pack of
wolves. On hands and knees now, he creeps on toward the ship. A sick wolf begins
to follow him. Finally the man kills the wolf with his bare teeth, biting the
wolf's throat and drinking the animal's blood. At last the men of the ship
discover a Athing@
inching itself along the beach. The men of the ship investigate and discover it
is the man. They take the man aboard the ship, and, after a few days, he is
strong enough to tell his story.
